About Me

I'm a retired lawyer, painter, author, illustrator and mom of three girls.

Here's my story:

I majored in art at Davidson College and studied at Parsons School of Design in New York and Paris.

Then, I got worried about being able to support myself and my love of expensive art supplies, so I went to the University of Mississippi School of Law.  I married and then practiced law briefly before retiring to paint full-time (thanks to my supportive husband).

Over the years, I showed my paintings throughout the Southeast and in a gallery in New York.  I did some work for casino mogul Steve Wynn when he opened a fabulously art-infested casino on the Mississippi Gulf Coast (before Katrina wiped it away).

But, I'd always, always, always had a burning desire to write children's books--ever since my beloved third grade teacher Evelyn Carter called me "Miss Creativity" and said I needed to be submitting my poetry and artwork to Highlights magazine (ahhhh--my first experience with rejection).

Soooo ... a few years ago, I made a commitment to learn everything that I could about the world of children's publishing.  With my writing friend Katie Anderson, I joined SCBWI and started going to conferences.  I had my manuscripts critiqued.  I sent things out.  I read every children's book I could get my hands on (it helped to have children to read to!) And, I worked, worked, worked on making my books and illustrations better.

In the fall of 2009, I signed with the super-amazing agent Joanna Volpe of Nancy Coffey Literary and Media Representation.

Last summer, I sold my first book to Viking Children's Books.

Happily ever after ...
